Tonight HBO has brought the story of Big and Little Edie to television with Grey Gardens starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. Based on the classic 1975 documentary of the same name by the Maysles brothers , both films center around Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale – aunt and first cousin of Jackie O who spent the end of their years mostly alone in a delipidated house. It’s a crazy story – racoons living in the walls, Little Edie’s very creative fashion sense, and the constant singing and yelling between mother and daughter.
The story of the Beales has caught on in recent years, as a musical and now HBO’s film.
The hype around newest incarnation has been mostly centered around Barrymore who portrays the highly eccentric (read: crazy) Little Edie.
Sadly I don’t subscribe to HBO so I haven’t seen it, but from what I’ve seen of Drew Barrymore’s spot-on portrayal of Little Edie, it’s pretty amazing this is the same gal who churned out those Charlie’s Angels flicks, Fever Pitch and Music and Lyrics (was anyone else creeped out by Hugh Grant and Drew being a romantic couple? And I love the Hugh …) can also do this kind of stuff. That’s a long way from Gertie on E.T.
